Foods

This chapter is about foods. We all eat foods, and our tastes are all very different from one another. I like fish, where as others might prefer steak. Even among our tastes in Fish, I might like Whitefish, and someone else might prefer Salmon. Whatever the case may be, there are so many foods to pick from, you just can't go wrong. We all have to eat, and we eat the foods we like to eat.

Artichokes And Avocados

© by Bud Lemire on April 6th, 2003

Artichokes and Avocados

God only knows

In my mouth, on my taste buds there

On the way to my stomach, without a care

Never had them, in my life before

But they're in it now, and I want more

Put some in my salad, or make a whole meal

No matter how you eat them, their taste is so unreal

Maybe have some with butter, or some mayonaise

They can be prepared, in just so many ways

They are both, color that is green

But don't taste anything, like the green bean

I wonder if they're cheaper, depending on where you are

Maybe you can get to them, by driving in your car

There are so many foods, I have yet to try

I wonder if I'll get the chance, to do it before I die

The best I can do, is to try something new each day

And eat more Artichokes and Avocados, as life goes on its way

Lived in Michigan all my life,

but never tried Artichokes and Avocados until I got to Washington state.

They taste very good, and now I love avocados.

Boiled Eggs

© by Bud Lemire on March 18, 2021

Everyone boils eggs in their own way

If it works for them, then it's okay

Some add a bit of salt to the pan

Others just boil them, any way they can

People will boil them for fifteen minutes, some a half hour

Some even boil them, while they take a shower

Just don't forget they're there, that's the key code

Otherwise your eggs, will pop and explode

They'll leave a sulfuric smell

Stinking up the kitchen from their shell

It's happened to me a couple of times I know

Now I make it a habit, to keep them on low

After they are boiled, you can let them sit

It all depends on, how you really like it

I like mine in cold water, and to set awhile

That is how I do it, that is just my style

Boiled eggs are good, so much you can make

Egg salad sandwiches, to picnic at the lake

A potato salad, for when you go camping in the summer

Without boiled eggs in your life, it would be a bummer

I know I may be cracked, but the yolk is on you.

Enjoy your boiled eggs anyway you want them.

Chicken & Rice

© by Bud Lemire on Sept 6, 2021

Chicken and rice

Sounds pretty nice

I'll have it today

With Basmati, my way

With a touch of garlic, and basil on the chicken

Makes my mouth water, for some really good licking

Basmati is from India, but some is grown here

The taste is so awesome, a rice I hold dear

I'll put the chicken, in the roaster my cousin gave to me

Cook it up real tender, like it always should be

The Rice Cooker, will cook at its own pace

It'll shut off when it's done, see the smile on my face

A little salad, will go perfect with this meal

A really great combination, is how I feel

The aroma of Basmati, has my taste buds dancing around

You'll find this rice at any grocery store, that's where its found

The Rice Cooker shut off, the chicken is done

The salad is made, that sure was fun

Now to sit down and eat, while I watch TV

Such a great meal, I'm so glad it's for me

When I lived in Washington state, I recall trying Basmati.

So when I got back to Escanaba, I found it, and have been eating it

ever since. If you like rice and haven't tried it yet, give

it a try. It's one of my favorites.

Chop Suey

© by Bud Lemire on Jan 24, 2018

There's a meal my Mom would fix for me

Water Chestnuts, bamboo chutes, what could it be

Chow Mein noodles, soybeans and poured over rice

Pork and Beef, and it sure was really nice

Put a little Soy Sauce on it, and it will taste great

A special meal for me, that I always ate

Must be my Birthday, or a special day for me

I sure do love Chop Suey, no matter what day it be

Back then, I filled my plate

I was happy, because it sure was great

I still love Chop Suey, but don't eat it like before

I have it now and then, when I buy it at the store

Thinking back ro those days, are memories I cherish in my heart

The foods that Mom made, were a delightful work of art

She always did her best, delicious food for her family

She made each meal with love, and I knew that was the key

Every time when my Birthday came, she would fix Chop Suey, and it

was such a special day because I loved it. Sometimes she would just

make it, because she knew I liked it. It was always a special day when

we had it. Pork and Beef, perfectly cooked. Chop Suey vegetables added.

Poured over rice and Chow Mein noodles. Add a touch of Soy Sauce, and

it was the best. Thank you Mom!

Corn On The Cob

© by Bud Lemire on May 22, 2014

I love to eat corn on the cob

Even though I dribble like a slob

Running down my hands and face

I nibble the corn at my own pace

There's many ways to cook it, some don't cook it long

But the way that you do it, is right for you, not wrong

Some even add sugar, to make it sweet

I even heard milk was added to make it complete

Lots of butter and a little salt added too

As long as the corn tastes just right for you

Peel the corn and look at that ear

Feeling kind of corny and no corn is near

I had some recently, and it tasted great

When it comes to corn on the cob, three I recently ate

When the sun goes down, I eat popcorn at night

So I can be even cornier, before it is daylight

So butter up some corn on the cob

Don't worry if it dribbles and you feel like a slob

Enjoy the taste that you've come to know

Look at all those kernels so neatly in a row

Butter up some corn on the cob and enjoy!

Donuts

© 2003 by Bud Lemire

They are so round, with a hole in the middle

Some are large, and some are so little

Some are like tractor wheels, and they are glazed

It depends on what kind, and how they are raised

Some come with powdered sugar, some are just plain

I've tasted chocolate covered ones and multi-grain

I love those with a filling, of custard or cream

Or jelly or jam, and some sure do gleam

Long ago in my youth, I'd dunk them in coffee

But now I'm quite pleased, to have them with tea

Deep fried and mastered, by a very good cook

A chef and a baker, without aide of a book

So many to choose from, and they all look so great

Hard decisions before me, which one will I make

Custard filled is calling, haven't had one in years

I yearn so much for one, my eyes have some tears

Roll me a donut, across the dining room table

I'll try eating a whole one, but only if I'm able

If I can manage, I'll eat what I can

They sure are delicious, fresh out of the pan

Good For The Soul

© by Bud Lemire on Feb 23, 2005

I found out something, I think you should know

There's so much more we receive, from an avocado

I notice when I eat one, this happens every time

It sends my chakra system moving, adds warmth to my mind

It fills my stomach with joy, but that's only a start

The warmth begins, in the chakra of the heart

It moves to the crown chakra, warming up my head

I find all my senses, going where they're lead

This is something, you don't hear about just anywhere

I thought since you're spiritual, that I would share

Now you have knowledge, that's good to know

The green little fruit avocado, is good for the soul

I'm addicted to avocados, what can I say.

Good For You

© by Bud Lemire on June 30, 2003

Eat your crust

oh if I must

Yes please do

It's good for you

Must I eat all spinach?

Yes, and the potatoes you must finish

But I can not eat the fish

No dessert until you clean your dish

But I can't seem to swallow

And the taste is hard to follow

Take a Drink of tea

and the set the foul taste free

Oh isn't it clean enough?

No, eat all of your stuff

But this I can not do

Then no ice cream for you!

Okay, I will try my best

But this food I so detest

If you eat it and are through

Then you would know, it's Good For You

This is a little different for me, but thought I'd try it.

Hazelnut

© by Bud Lemire on Sept 5, 2018

I love to travel back in my memory, to when I was a kid

And think of all the things, that as kids we did

One was picking Hazelnuts, at Pioneer Trail Park one day

You had to wear gloves, to keep their bristles away

They were on the outside of the Hazelnut, when you pick

They'd get all over your hand, and they sure would stick

Pull off the green skin with the pickers, and the nut was there

It tasted so very good, you almost didn't want to share

Yet there were enough Hazelnuts, to go around

Some of them were seen, lying on the ground

Corylus Cornuta, or the Beaked Hazelnut as it is known

Looks like a beak or horn, wherever it is grown

It prefers the sun, yet tolerates some shade

It's taste is so great, you really have it made

It's a shrub, that grows close to 10 feet

All I know for sure is, they sure are good to eat

Depending on where you are, the nuts will be large or small

But if you're nutty like me, you will love them all

There are two kinds of Hazelnuts, The American and the Beaked kind

They are also widespread in Europe and Asia, you will find

Some call them Filberts, or the Cob Nut as well

You find them with the Mixed Nuts, and they always sell

It was the Beaked Hazelnut, that we had around here

We'd peel the husk off, grinning ear to ear

We'd wear gloves, so those picky hairs wouldn't get on either hand

This was a wonderful childhood memory, I thought it was grand

Back in the 60's, Dad would take us way in back of Pioneer Trail Park

and they had the Beaked Hazelnuts there. We'd wear gloves and pick

them. Bring them home, and sit on the back porch peeling them.

Many times we'd eat a nut or two while we peeled, but we had to

make sure we had all those bristles from the skin off our hands.

Those were the good old days. Anyone else ever pick Hazelnuts?

I Love Asparagus

© by Bud Lemire on June 28, 2017

I love asparagus, you might already know

Those spears of green, give me an inner glow

I steam them, and sometimes in a salad they'll be

I believe a healthy diet, is really life's key

Green spears, purple spears, and even the white

They hold a lot of vitamins, within every bite

I think, they have a wonderful taste

When I have them, none go to waste

Here's something, and it is the truth

I like to drink, asparagus juice

Some may think I'm crazy, I really don't care

But only on special occasions, will I ever share

Not everybody likes it, but that's okay by me

Why you can even smell it, when you go pee

Almost every Friday, I have it with my fish

Let me tell you, they sure look colorful on my dish

Give me a spear, I'll eat them all

Maybe it will, help me grow tall

Well, it hasn't helped me grow tall yet. But I am

enjoying the taste of them in the meantime. It is

good for you too. No matter which way you have

it, it is good for you.

I Love Ice Cream

© by Bud Lemire on Nov 19, 2012

I love ice cream

It's always in my dreams

I love vanilla with chocolate syrup

If I eat too fast it makes me burp

An ice cream headache will come

Frozen brain will make me dumb

Popsicle toes may be the case

And icicles all over my face

Oh Butter Pecan and Maple Nut

Pistachio, Mint, or I'll tell you what

In Asia, they have the flavor Green Tea

I wonder what that taste would be

Caramel, fudge, or nuts galore

Nice ice cream addicts, who could ask for more

I'll take three scoops, and mix it up

In a bowl, not in a cup

Oh boy, I really need some soon

The better it is with a bigger spoon

Yes, It's as bad as it may seem

I'm an addict for sure, I Love Ice Cream

Kielbasa

© by Bud Lemire on Jan 26, 2015

When I was a kid, we had kielbasa with sour kraut

Now I hunger for it, it makes me scream and shout

Every time I go to the store

I pick one up and I crave for more

I cut it up and with potatoes I fry

And eat it with a V8, which I also buy

Not sure why this started, or when it will end

Yet in my apartment, it's become quite a trend

A little ketchup and mustard on the side

Then I open my mouth, so very wide

It doesn't stay very long on my plate

Every lunch with kielbasa is too hard to wait

Fried so the potatoes are a bit crispy too

Cut into fine pieces, and it's easy to chew

Once in awhile I'll add an onion to the pan

Because whatever I do, I know that I can

A dash of garlic powder is perfect for taste

Nothing on my plate ever goes to waste

When I'm out of kielbasa, it's not the same

I should have bought two, I got myself to blame

Just last year my craving for kielbasa started.

Some have said I'll get sick of it, but it hasn't

happened yet. I'll enjoy until that day does

come (if it does). I savor and enjoy the taste

of a kielbasa.

Note: my craving did end, and then went through a

pineapple craving. Now that is ended. Not sure what is next.

Must Go

© by Bud Lemire on Dec 28, 2015

When the leftovers have outstayed their welcome on the shelf

It's time for someone to take action, possibly yourself

Eat it up quickly, surely you should know

Before the food goes bad, it “Must Go”

Do it before you have anything new

Or the food will look gross, and smell awful too

Then you'll have wasted the food that you bought

Better to think wisely, and act with that thought

It's time to have a “Must Go” meal tonight

Down to your stomach, out of mind, out of sight

That wasn't so bad, and what a great taste

The food that had sat there, didn't go to waste

Check the expiration date, in case it “Must Go”

Eat it for supper, before the mold starts to show

Don't fill up your garbage with food that's gone bad

Have a “Must Go” meal, that's what I just had

Look through your refrigerator, see what is there

Look closely at what is wrapped everywhere

If you see something that needs attention, you'll know

It's time to have a supper, with another “Must Go”

We always called them leftovers, but recently I've heard

people calling them “Must Go.” I decided it would make

a great poem. We all have thrown out food that could have

been saved if only we remembered and noticed it was there.

Sometimes I think we spend more money than we need to,

and there is always something that “Must Go.” So go look

over your refrigerator and see if there is something that

Must Go” tonight.

Our Crazy Taste Buds
© by Bud Lemire on Sept 22, 2008

There are many combinations of what people will eat
Sour Kraut, salty chips, or something oh so sweet
In Australia a beetroot sandwich is what we call a beet
People everywhere combining foods to make them feel complete

I like apple juice with popcorn and sliced cheese
Extra Sharp Cheddar or Muenster if you please
But there are stranger combinations than I ever knew
And I’m here with this poem to share them with you

Radishes with crackers is a new one to me
Green onions and white cake, what can be the key
Our crazy taste buds, cravings we desire
A new trend to try out, foods that we admire

Clam chowder with peanut butter on crackers is one I know
I’m sure you can find new combinations wherever you go
I try not to knock them, I’ll give anything a try
Who knows how it’ll taste, do we ever know why

Our taste buds know it sounds and tastes good to us
Our stomachs are happy and it’s the taste buds that it trusts
We must go with our cravings, trying something new
As our taste buds drive us crazy with everything we chew

Do you have any crazy combinations of food that you’d like to share?

A Piece Of Pie

© by Bud Lemire on Nov 27, 2011

I was in the store the other day and saw a piece of pie

I craved it so badly and yet I passed it by

Oh it would have tasted so good with ice cream on top

Warmed up just a little, not sure why I didn't stop

It was strawberry-rhubarb, and it sounded great to me

But I love most pies, it's for my sweet tooth you see

Peach pie is a favorite that I love to eat

And a blueberry pie surely can't be beat

Every now and then lemon meringue comes to mind

But I surely can't leave a cherry pie behind

Pumpkin is the holiday favorite around here

I had a piece of it just earlier this year

When I lived in Washington blackberry was supreme

Warmed up just perfectly and topped off with ice cream

A key lime pie is very rich in taste

Yet it tasted very good and couldn't go to waste

Then there's the pie that is made of meat

I remember Mom making it, but it wasn't sweet

Next time I'm craving a piece of pie

I'll put it in my shopping cart, and not pass it by

You only live once! And I got to enjoy the best of everything.

Do you ever get the cravings for something and have to have it.

I'm talking foods, possibly sweets. Don't pass it by, put it in your cart.

You'll be glad you did.

Pizza Day

© by Bud Lemire on April 9, 2013

I'm hungry for a pizza, covered all in cheese

Lots of mushroom slices, on it if you please

A thin crust is what I like to eat

Tea to drink, as long as it's not too sweet

I use to love green peppers, but now they don't like me

I love the taste of them, yet now we disagree

I like the taste of onions, but some can be too strong

So I don't have them, where some think they belong

I like the taste of garlic, but just a little touch

Sometimes they add a bit too much

Black olives are okay, my favorite are the green

They go good in pasta salads and snacking in between

We'll have it delivered, arriving at our door

Sure beats going out to buy it at a store

They keep it warm for us to eat right away

Every now and then I love a pizza day

I'm not a big pizza lover

But it sure is good for a change

Popcorn

© by Bud Lemire in 2003

Nothing smells as good, as popcorn in the air

In the pan, see it popping everywhere

Put some butter on mine please

Sometimes I like to eat it with cheese

I like to sit, and watch TV as I eat

It sure tastes good, the feelings hard to beat

Sometimes the kernels can be hard to chew

A half popped one is much easier for you

Oh the sound of popping, is music to the ear

I don’t know the tune, but it’s still good to hear

Another batch is done, I can fill up my bowl

Did you know, that popcorn’s good for your soul

Some people like to eat it, and drink it with pop

I like mine with apple juice, from the tree top

Whatever your choice, it always tastes great

Whether you’re alone, or cuddling up with your mate

If you’re hungry, and you need a snack

Don’t be worried, or have a panic attack

Take out the pan, or microwave some tonight

And let your tummy, be filled with delight

I grew up on popcorn. We use to have this big pan

and we would fill it to the top. Everyone would

grab a bowl of it, and eat while watching TV.

Pumpernickel

© by Bud Lemire on Feb 8, 2004

Give me a sandwich, on pumpernickel

Tuna fish with mayo, and one sliced pickle

Cut it in quarters for me if you could

If you have potato chips, I'd like some

We eat them plenty, where I come from

They add so much to every bite

If you have some apple juice too

I'll take some of that, also from you

Because fruit drinks are good for the heart

I thank you very much

Now I'll have a good lunch

And it'll help me through the day

RyKrisp

© by Bud Lemire on April 6, 2015

It's funny how we crave the things from so long ago

Things we haven't had in years call out to our soul

Our taste buds wish to experience them once more

To find out if we like them as we did before

I remember long ago we ate RyKrisp, Mom loved them a lot

So just recently, that's exactly what I got

They tasted just as I remembered, absolutely great

With a little butter on top, it is what I ate

With some green olives, and slices of cheese

Enough to fill me up, not a chance to tease

My taste buds were dancing all over the place

Memories flashed back, causing a smile on my face

I took a bite and there was that familiar crunch

A bite of cheese and a green olive, what a wonderful lunch

What a wonderful taste that brings me back in time

So many pleasant memories passing through my mind

I recall those days with Mom, as we munched away

Eating RyKrisp seasoned perfectly on each and every day

Every time I'll think of Mom, as I take a bite

I know she is watching me, as I crunch in delight

It is so wonderful to visit again the taste of RyKrisp. It tastes the

same as I remember it, and I wonder why I got away from it. But

I am glad it is in my life again. Because when something tastes good,

it's the best thing for your taste buds.

Note: Not long after this poem, RyKrisp went out of business.

But now I am eating WASA and it is pretty good.

The Crock Pot

© by Bud Lemire on Jan 7, 2015

You may think it's crock

But I love my slow cooking pot

It's just like me

Getting it done slowly

I always thought “Take your time and do it well”

This pot takes hours, and I love the smell

Chicken soup or a beef or pork roast

Looks so good that I just have to post

Carrots, onions, celery, add for a great taste

None of these foods ever go to waste

The soup isn't salty, the flavor is great

I burnt my tongue, because it's hard to wait

There's a load of things you can make

A slow cooker in the time it will take

Just put it on low

And let it go

Your stomach will be happy when it is done

When you are filled up, and had so much fun

You did it yourself, at such a slow pace

The end results will put a smile on your face

I got this Crock Pot aka Slow Cooker for Christmas

from my sister Nancy and her husband Harold. I

decided to venture into trying things at a slow pace.

Chicken soup was great! Beef & Pork roast was

fantastic! Back to Chicken soup, and it tasted

wonderful. Who knows where this will take me.

I shall explore other foods as well. It may be a

load of Crock, but it sure does taste great.

More recently I made Chop Suey and it was great!

Upon Her Plate

© by Bud Lemire on June 25, 2006

She puts her food upon her plate

But only one at time she ate

She says that the food can not touch

Or she won’t eat, for it’s too much

She doesn’t understand the way she eats

Separating veggies from potatoes and meats

It’s just the way she’s been known to be

I eat much differently than she

I eat some of each in every bite

My taste buds dance in joyful delight

And down to my stomach, is where it goes

Why we eat differently, only God knows

You may eat differently than her or I

And others may wonder how come and why

Mixing corn with mashed potatoes

Or toasting bread to eat with tomatoes

Dipping popcorn in mayonnaise

Eating foods in different ways

All I know is what’s right for you

Is the way you do the things you do

Through the years, you find many people

who have their own unique style of eating.

They combine foods that would make it gross.

But everyone's taste buds are different.
